Croissance de l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron de 1987 à 1998 ArchiMer
Le Moine, Olivier; Geairon, Philippe.
This report aims to study the oyster Crassostrea gigas growth and production over a 12 years time's span in the Bay of Marennes Oleron. Results of 12 years of oyster growth did not show any significant oyster biological productivity decrease, nor trend. In contrast, annual growth showed a large variability, which will be correlated with environmental conditions. Moreover, annual growth variability was greater than the variability due to site location, but the Ronce experimental site. The later, located in the south west part of the Bay of Marennes Oleron, has been the leading oyster growth site since 1989. The annual shell growth variability was greater than oyster dry meat weight fluctuation. Both 1990 and 1991 years were characterized by the largest...

Oysters as sentinels of climate variability and climate change in coastal ecosystems ArchiMer
Thomas, Yoann; Cassou, Christophe; Gernez, Pierre; Pouvreau, Stephane.
Beyond key ecological services, marine resources are crucial for human food security and socio-economical sustainability. Among them, shellfish aquaculture and fishing are of primary importance but become more vulnerable under anthropogenic pressure, as evidenced by reported mass mortality events linked to global changes such as ocean warming and acidification, chemical contamination, and diseases. Understanding climate-related risks is a vital objective for conservation strategies, ecosystems management and human health. We provide here a comprehensive study of the historical mortality of adult oysters related to observed climate variability along the French Atlantic coast from 1986 to 2015, and we built on this knowledge to develop hindcast and forecast...

REMORA 94. Analyse des résultats de la seconde année du réseau de suivi de la croissance de l'huître creuse sur les côtes françaises ArchiMer
Goyard, Emmanuel.
The Aquaculture Resources department Mollusc Network (REMORA ) has been monitoring in 1994 like in 1993 the growth of homogeneous batches of Crassostrea gigas (initially 18 months old, same origin, same history, same size) in the main French production areas. The monitored parameters deal with growth, morphology, survival, composition and parasite infestations. The comparison between two rearing conditions (traditional bags versus wooden plate to which individuals were stuck) demonstrated like in 1993 improved growth rate (which could also be explained by the lower local density) and a tendency for the oysters to become wider on plates (which is probably related to the absence of shell erosion). Major regional characteristics are revealed by the analysis,...

Three decades of data on phytoplankton and phycotoxins on the French coast: Lessons from REPHY and REPHYTOX ArchiMer
Belin, Catherine; Soudant, Dominique; Amzil, Zouher.
In France, REPHY (Observation and Surveillance Network for Phytoplankton and Hydrology in coastal waters) and REPHYTOX (Monitoring Network for Phycotoxins in marine organisms) have been contributing to long-term time series on ocean health for more than 30 years. The aim of this paper is to describe these networks and to highlight their key results. Over the last 20 years, phytoplankton flora analysis on French coasts from the Channel to Mediterranean has shown that the five “emblematic” taxa are Chaetoceros, Skeletonema, Cryptophyceae, Leptocylindrus and Pseudo-nitzschia. The latter, together with the taxa of interest Dinophysis + Phalacroma, Alexandrium, and Karenia, have been consistently recorded along the entire French coastline. However, when taking...
